Wheat Beer Bread

1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
4 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
12 oz can or bottle of beer
1/4 to 1/2 cup melted butter, if desired

Preheat oven to 350. Lightly grease a 9x5 inch loaf pan

In a large mixing bowl, combine both flours, baking powder, salt, and brown sugar. Pour in beer and stir until a stiff batter is formed. It may be necessary to mix dough with your hands. Scrape dough into prepared pan. Pour melted butter (if using) over the dough in thepan.

Bake in preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into center of the loaf comes out clean.

I made multiple batches of this recipe last Christmas for gifts for my family. I mixed together the dry ingredients and put it in a cellophane bag. Then I added a tag with instructions to add 12 oz of beer and the melted butter along with baking instructions. It was a big hit! You could also give a loaf pan and/or a bottle of beer with the gift.
